With Bosch, the GDA network of expert companies is expanding to include a pioneer in the field of hydrogen-capable 'on-site power generation': Bosch is working purposefully on technologies that will make a valuable contribution to CO2-neutral energy supply. An essential part of this is the development of decentralised small power plants based on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology.

Bosch becomes GDA partner

Bosch is increasingly involved in the application of SOFC technology in the data centre industry. The focus is particularly on the integration of holistic modular SOFC solutions in the environment of edge and cloud data centres. The aim is to relieve the burden on traditional energy grids by means of grid-independent generation of primary energy and to enable data centres to scale according to demand as well as flexibility in the choice of location.

Using SOFC technology, CO2 emissions can already be reduced on the basis of natural gas or biomethane, and hardly any nitrogen oxides or particulate matter are emitted. Operation with green hydrogen also enables completely emission-free energy generation. In this way, Bosch supports the sustainability ambitions of many data centre operators and a path to CO2-neutral energy supply - completely without certificates.

"The industry faces numerous challenges such as sustainability, energy availability and time-to-market of edge and cloud data centres in German metropolitan regions," says Marcus Spickermann, Head of Sales & Market Development at Bosch SOFC. "Together with industry partners, we want to engage in understanding these challenges holistically and actively contribute to related solutions as part of the GDA Think Tanks."

GDA Chairwoman Anna Klaft also welcomes the company's entry: "There are a number of levers that can be tightened to make the operation of data centres resource-efficient and low-emission - we are looking forward to the exchange on on-site power generation with our new partner Bosch."
