GDA: Sustainable data center industry is a collaborative effort

Sustainable data center industry is a collaborative effort

Frankfurt am Main, 13 Oktober 2022 – Data centers are essential for modern life and work, and a large number of industries are directly or indirectly dependent on reliable digital infrastructure. Due to its enormous growth and high energy consumption, the industry has increasingly moved into the focus of politics and the public.

For the first time, the German Datacenter Association, in cooperation with Bitkom and eco - Verband der Internetwirtschaft, has now published a position paper outlining the joint perspectives for a sustainable data center industry. The publication defines sustainability in terms of a balance between economic, social and ecological aspects.

Based on the current circumstances of the data center market, the publication identifies the factors that the three industry associations believe inhibit sustainable growth and business. The document also outlines possible solutions.

GDA Chairwoman Anna Klaft summarizes: "There is great commitment in the industry to making the data center industry sustainable. But this can only be achieved jointly, in cooperation with all participating industries. In particular, an active involvement of politics, especially through a targeted adjustment of the economic and energy policy framework conditions, is indispensable."
